How to Make a Slip Knot

For most crochet patterns, the first step is to create a slip knot. What is a slip knot? A slip knot is the type of knot that is used to attach the yarn to the crochet. This is achieved by tying a simple loop at the end of the yarn and then slipping your hook through the middle of the hook.

This slip knot is not counted as a stitch. Do not count this as part of your chains when creating your starting chain stitches. Be careful not to work into the slip knot of the foundation chain, or you will add an extra stitch!

Just how every crocheter has their own way in holding their hook or maintaining yarn tension. There are many ways to create a slip knot, and everyone has their favorite go-to method. Find the one that is the easiest for you.

Notes

The part of the yarn that is leading into the ball of yarn is known as the “ball end”.

The part of the yarn that is closest to the end of the yarn or the opposite end is known as the “tail end”

These instructions are for right-handed crocheters and will be using US terminology.
